We're committed to vehicle education here at Dick Dyer Mercedes-Benz. We want you to stay safe and prepared on the road. If you get a spare tire, it's important to know the difference between types of spare tires and how to use each.
If you have a larger vehicle, you will probably have a full-size spare. It can handle the weight of heavier vehicles, and you can drive on it like you would any other tire. The one downside to a full-size spare tire is that it can tend to take up excess space in your vehicle.
A donut, or compact temporary spare, is more convenient to haul around. However, you need to treat this type of tire differently. It's not meant to hold up to long distances or fast speeds. Drive at approximately 55 miles per hour or less on a donut, and replace it within 70 miles of use.
